Naphta Radio Interviews

A couple of links to shows that I guested on recently here in Dublin... the Dave Fanning show on RTE Radio 1, and Donal Dineen's late-night alternative music show on Today FM. RTE Radio 1 is the principal national station while Today FM is a big commercial thing, mainly talk-show driven (Dineen's rather eclectic show excepted).

My remit on the Fanning show was vague: to somehow fit the whole history of electronic music - and its Irish exponents - into less than 15 minutes!

The Dineen show was somewhat more successful insofar as he is well clued-up about contemporary music of all shades and was very enthusiastic about my album 'Long Time Burning'. So a special big up him and a big up to Mully for sorting that one out...

This is a mix which summarises my listening habits for the past 6 months/9 months or so. It ended up being comprised of nearly all guitar/instrument based ambient with a bit of post rock and classical in there as well. The approach is in the vein of the swhantology mixes, check here and here for info on the ideas behind it. I've been toying with the idea of doing a mix over the christmas break and wanted to get some Stars of the Lid, the excellent Type records and Miasmah records (run by one half of Deaf Center) into a mix. Really, it was after seeing Stars of the Lid play live in Dublin in November (they where really amazing!) - i tried to get a gig dj'ing for them but unfortuatly they already had a support, so i basically had a load of records picked that i would have used for the gig. Unable to let the idea for a mix pass me by, i decided i wanted to get it done using the records I'd picked for the possible support slot. As it turned out i didn't get it done until the new year, as christmas was much more about family time and eating. But an extra week off work in the new year gave me enough time to find a spare hour to record it.

The set up for the mix was the usual - 2 Technics 1210's, 1 Pioneer CDJ800, and my trusty Numark 3 channel mixer. Once again no mp3's in this mix - just vinyl and cd's. The mix was recorded live in one take with no edits (just a little bit of compression applied afterwards). Download below or subscribe through the usual means.
